Welcome to the YDOA Student Group!
The YDOA Student Group was founded in 1965 by Past President Bernard Porter in order to encourage and support young organists. Sadly, the YDOA Student Group was disbanded many years ago due to dwindling numbers. However, a recent revival of interest in York for organs and organ music has prompted Maximillian Elliott (Vice President of the YDOA) to re-found the YDOA Student Group in 2016. Currently comprising nine members, the YDOA Student Group is extremely keen to grow and we have received a huge amount of support from the rest of the YDOA.
Our first ‘official’ event was a social evening at a local York public house on Friday 14th of October 2016. A group photograph from this evening can be seen below. On Saturday 3rd of September 2016, members of the YDOA Student Group spent an enjoyable afternoon visiting three house organs in the East Riding. Four members of the YDOA Student Group took part in a Masterclass with Gerard Brooks on Saturday 29th April 2017 at St Chad’s Church, Campleshon Road, York. Several photographs from the masterclass can be seen below. On the 30th of September 2017, members of the YDOA Student Group will perform a composite recital in All Saints’ Church, North Street, York.
Over the next few years, we hope that the YDOA Student Group will continue to host a wide variety of events in both academic and social environments. If you are a student who plays the organ, or are keen to learn, please consider joining the YDOA. Any eligible YDOA members will then automatically be enrolled into the YDOA Student Group.
